This three-day introductory course, led by St John Starkey, explores a range of traditional woven seating techniques.
Participants will be guided through several weaving methods, gaining practical experience with materials such as reel rush, paper rush, seagrass and Danish cord.

Explore a variety of weaving techniques including L-nails, square weaves and envelope weaves
Learn how to assemble a stool from pre-made components, gaining insight into basic joinery
Develop an understanding of different weaving materials and their properties
Select and complete one weaving pattern on the final day
Materials and finish
All materials will be provided, including a pre-made stool frame and a selection of traditional weaving fibres.
By the end of the course, each participant will take home a completed stool, which they have assembled and woven.

This course is open to both students and professionals who wish to develop practical skills and understanding in woven seating techniques, with knowledge that can be applied in their own workshop practice.

StJohn Starkie
StJohn has been teaching for over 20 years and building things out of wood for a lot longer! With his wife Bryony he runs The Quiet Workshop near Cambridge building chairs and teaching chairmaking and seat weaving. He makes a range of chairs in traditional and modern styles using a variety of domestic hardwoods and seat materials including river rush and Danish cord.
