This two-day course, led by Gregory Cupitt-Jones, focuses on traditional fluting (channel back upholstery), a distinctive technique used to create structured vertical channels within upholstered backs.
Participants will be guided through the processes required to achieve clean, evenly spaced flutes using traditional materials and methods, with emphasis on accuracy, consistency and finish.

Set out and mark channel spacing
Construct and form fluted panels
Practise techniques for achieving even and consistent channels
Apply traditional upholstery methods for a professional finish
Materials and finish
The course will use traditional materials and techniques throughout.
Participants are required to bring: 1 metre of plain fabric (suitable for upholstery).

This course is open to both students and professional upholsterers who wish to develop or refine their skills in structured upholstery techniques.

Greg Cupitt-Jones
Gregory Cupitt-Jones is an award-winning Master Upholsterer with extensive experience across both traditional and conservation upholstery.
Originally trained as a cabinet maker, he later specialised in upholstery, studying Furniture Design under David James. He has since been awarded the Guild of Traditional Upholsterers Challeng cup in Traditional Upholstery three times.
